His Nature of Necessity did much to further discussions of modality in metaphysics, and his most recent work in epistemology, the roots of which began early in his career, have stimulated a multitude of developments and critiques in philosophical and theological circles. It would not be an overstatement to say that virtually all matters metaphysical and epistemological must address much of Plantinga’s own work. Throughout his prolific career, Plantinga spent the majority of his years teaching, first, at Calvin College for nineteen years, then, until his recent retirement, at Notre Dame University. Plantinga studied philosophy at Harvard, Calvin College, the University of Michigan, and Yale, earning his PhD from Yale in 1957. As the son of a philosophy and psychology professor, Plantinga evidenced a knack for and interest in philosophy early on. Raised in the Christian Reformed Church, he has theological roots in the Dutch Reformed tradition. Alvin Plantinga was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

in a monastery in Ireland when a priest named Artt receives a message from God in a dream: He and two other monks must travel to the Atlantic Ocean, find an uninhabited island, and found a new monastery there. Special thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown for providing me with an ARC of this book! Summary This is a book I’ll be buying in physical form on release day! While Haven is rather different from most of the novels I read, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It follows a trio of monks as they attempt to make this harsh island their sanctuary.īack in early 2017, I had loved Emma Donoghue’s novel The Wonder, and for the past two years, I’ve been meaning to read her latest release, The Pull of the Stars. Set in Ireland, it takes readers back in time to about 600 C.E., onto small, isolated rock of an island. Earlier this year, I was thrilled to get an advanced copy of Haven by Emma Donoghue, due out in two weeks. He goes into graphic detail with his discovery of it, his emotions in dealing with it, and God’s promises and hope in the midst of it. In this short book Chaffey addresses head on his own battle with cancer (Leukemia). I’m in the process of trying to understand it, develop a positive attitude with it, and seek to overcome it. Biblical Reminders of Hope While Battling CancerĪs a newbie to cancer – just diagnosed with throat cancer a week ago – I’m reading everything I can get my hands on with reference to cancer. In the end, I stopped doing it because those books, notebooks, slum book could hardly give me an idea of who she was. It’s just… I remember reading and going through my mother’s things when I was 12… trying to get a glimpse of how she was as a person. My most favorite part of the book is when Griff was reading through Gemma’s journal and there was that entry in July 4 th that made me bawl like a baby. I find it romantic that even as a kid, Brian couldn’t get his hands off of Pierce. I just wish there were more lovey-dovey moments between Griff and Pierce before they jumped in the sack but that’s just me, I guess. Stranger on the Shore made me feel all of these. Josh’s works make me laugh make me feel on the edge of my seat make my heart clench bring tears to my eyes keep on making me guess (who the culprit is), render me speechless. The thing is, I’ve said the same, exact thing after reading his Christmas codas in his blog… and his other works that I’ve read before that. I don’t know what to say… Josh Lanyon had done it again. This book will take you through the entire process, from your initial idea through the finished script. Conceiving and writing a pilot that can launch a series is a complex assignment even for a seasoned pro. Tie-in books are usually inferior to the thing they are based on, and A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Read, the first book to be based on the television show Psych, is no exception. Today's aspiring writer can be tomorrow's showrunner. Television networks are so desperate for new voices and fresh ideas that for the first time in history they're buying spec pilot scripts and turning them into series. Paine had only the barest acquaintance with American affairs when, with Rush’s encouragement, he turned an invitation by Franklin to write a history of the Anglo-American controversy into the occasion for composing a passionate tract for American independence. It was written by an Englishman, not an American. It “burst from the press,” Benjamin Rush wrote, “with an effect which has rarely been produced by types and papers in any age or country.” Its effect, Franklin said, was “prodigious.” It touched some extraordinarily sensitive nerve in American political awareness in the confusing period in which it appeared. For it is a work of genius-slapdash as it is, rambling as it is, crude as it is. How it could have been produced by the bankrupt Quaker corsetmaker, the sometime teacher, preacher, and grocer, and twicedismissed excise officer who happened to catch Benjamin Franklin’s attention in England and who arrived in America only 14 months before Common Sense was published is nothing one can explain without explaining genius itself. Common Sense is the most brilliant pamphlet written during the American Revolution, and one of the most brilliant pamphlets ever written in the English language. It’s urgent because Amanda is dying and David is keen to discover “the exact moment when the worms come into being”. It’s not clear whether the worms are figurative or real, but as the story comes to life it begins to make more sense.ĭavid, it turns out, was accidentally poisoned six years earlier. It’s so choppy and disorienting that only the formatting of the text - italic for David’s voice, normal for Amanda’s - helps the reader navigate their urgent chat. Initially, the conversation between Amanda and David is hard to follow. Caught up in a nightmareįever Dream is aptly named because reading it is akin to being caught up in an illogical dream. What ensues is a fast-paced and rather strange tale, which has a powerful and shocking twist right at the very end. The story is told in dialogue between two characters called Amanda and David, who may be mistaken for mother and son, but they are not related.Īmanda is lying in a hospital bed and is on the brink of dying, while David sits beside her and quizzes her about the events leading up to her hospitalisation. The result? Samantha Schweblin’s experimental novella Fever Dream. Take a handful of suspense, mix it with a dash of horror and pepper it with enough octane to fuel a small fire. Translated from the Spanish by Megan McDowell. Fiction – hardcover Oneworld 151 pages 2017. By breaking away from her famous Harry Potter children’s books (although widely read by adults too) and purposely writing explicit adult content, this novel will never be re-published with children’s covers.Ĭentering on the small provincial town of Pagford, The Casual Vacancy follows residents in turmoil, upset by the unexpected death of Barry Fairbrother, a local councillor equally admired and reviled for his political stance and favour towards social causes of which his opponents find controversial. The Casual Vacancy can therefore be seen as adult in every sense of the word. Rowling’s first foray into adult literature has received mixed reviews some praising her bold exploration of a society ruled by class, while others criticising a brash attempt at realism, covering subjects such as promiscuity, prostitution, rape, drug addiction, child abuse and death. definitely a big step in the right direction towards a better world for animals (and the health of our kids, and planet too). Thank you to The Seed for hosting a whole panel dedicated to the subject of raising vegan kids. I think because more and more adults are becoming vegan, and those adults are having kids, it makes complete sense that the subject of raising veg kids is also becoming more popular, and worthy of discussion. And now that I have my very own vegan kid, it's relevant to me. I was very excited to be asked to be part of the ‘Raising Vegan Kids’ panel along with Nora Kramer, Michelle Schwegmann, and Chloe Jo Davis at The Seed: A Vegan Experiencein NYC. I’ve gone to many vegan and animal rights conferences and events, but there is hardly ever a mention on the topic of raising vegan kids.
